The Developmental edit
For When You Have a Complete Manuscript
This comprehensive developmental edit is designed for writers who have completed a full manuscript and are ready to engage deeply with revision.
The process includes:
An initial conversation to discuss your manuscript, your intentions, and your revision goals;
An in-depth editorial letter addressing both the architecture of the work and its execution on the page, including both macro and micro elements, such as theme, structure, plot, character, voice, tone, pacing, setting, language, syntax, and more;
Line-level and margin notes throughout the manuscript, responding closely to the text itself;
A follow-up discussion (by Zoom or phone) with your Author-Mentor to talk through the feedback and answer questions.
Following the edit, you will have a clear understanding of your manuscript’s strengths and challenges, along with a thoughtful framework for revision.
“Now I’m in a second round of developmental editing with Liz. When I began I knew almost nothing. I had no training in how to structure a novel or map out a plot or develop characters. All of my writing had been academic, professional, or journalistic. My investments in time, money, energy over the years continue to be worth it. Especially valuable is the partnership with Onward Literary Mentoring.”
